Hele Mai – Let’s Learn About Paddling Together

Paddle with Me
We will be using concepts of canoe paddling and navigation as metaphors in moving through this course.  In every lesson introduction, I’ll include a “Paddle with Me” section to provide an overview of each lesson. I’ll also include a “Paddler’s Perspective” section in which I’ll share with you some of my own thoughts regarding the lesson. So let’s get started!

In this lesson, we are introducing the course. You will learn introductory techniques in outrigger canoe paddling. The metaphor of paddling lends itself well to the course content. I hope you feel like a voyager in this class. We will be going through the course syllabus – making sure you understand what to expect. Lastly, you will be asked to do a Skill Check which will remain private, only shared with the instructor of the course. So, open up your minds and enjoy the ride!

A Paddler’s Perspective
I’m so excited to be teaching this course. I hope you enjoy it! Please let me know anytime throughout the course, if you have questions or concerns. I am completely open to discussing any of the materials and assignments and I check my email often. Regarding the syllabus, I hope the knowledge checks help to point out some important aspects of the syllabus. It’s always a good idea to revisit the course syllabus regularly, at least once a week. This helps you to maintain balance (in the canoe) and not stray off course and get lost. As my coach used to say, “eyes in the boat!”…  which was hard when a cute guy was standing on shore (smiles). Don’t get distracted. This course will require reading and introspective thought. And, we’re all in this together! In a summer session, a three credit course goes by very fast..  although, we’re not really racing the canoe, it may feel like a race. Plan your week well so that you can enjoy the resources, activities and reflective writings.

In the next 6 weeks, this course will be a big part of your lives… hang in there with me! Stay hydrated, well-nourished and well-rested. And, most importantly, have fun with it!! ʻEkahi! ʻElua! ʻEkolu! Hele Mai! (1,2,3, let’s go!)
