Paddle with me
In this lesson, the required video will discuss culturally appropriate approaches to health. While watching the video, think about these questions:
- What is “health” from a Pacific perspective? (you may need to watch the video again to get the messages of defining “health”).
- What is the connection between health and “the land”?
You are also asked to read two required articles, reflecting successful and culturally appropriate approaches utilizing cultural safety as a model. The two articles describe how, with cultural safety, communities can be resilient. In the Foley article, cultural safety is apparent as the dietitians build trust in the community. The result of this trust improved the availability, acceptability and appropriateness of dietetics services. In the Jackson article, a team of Indigenous academics teach students about Indigenous culture, at times, discussing very sensitive topics. Overall, the students and teaching team had a very positive experience.
A Paddler’s Perspective
All three resources in this lesson, exhibit positive approaches that are culturally relevant and safe for the engaged populations. We are nearing the end of our course. There are a few take-home messages I’d like you to remember:
- Be aware of your own culture, values, bias, history – all which contribute to your own worldview.
- Your own worldview does influence your current thoughts and actions.
- Be open to new ideas, different values, and traditional ways.
- Listen, with humility.
- Be respectful.
- Ensure those you are approaching or engaging with are feeling safe.
