1. Standards and Objectives

This semester we’ll be working from 3 sets of standards:

  1. Nā Hopena A‘o
  2. Teaching Tolerance Social Justice Standards
  3. Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HSTB), Teacher Performance

2. Course Descriptions

In Term 1 the two seminar courses (STE 401 and STE 440) are taught as a single fully integrated interdisciplinary seminar. The field course STE 403 requires the majority of course time to be spent in a Secondary classroom engaging in participatory observations. View the Course Descriptions of the Term 1 courses.

3. The Integrated Term

The Three Learning Hui

Throughout Term 1 you will have the opportunity to work in a variety of group settings.

  • Waiola (Whole Group). Throughout the semester, we will have a number of opportunities to meet as a large group. This large group will include all of the students in the STE Secondary program, both online and face-to-face. Large group meetings will be co-taught by a team of STE Secondary professors.
  • Kawaikini (Interdisciplinary Small Groups). At some points in the semester, we will have the opportunity to meet in interdisciplinary small groups. These small groups will include students from a variety of content areas and disciplinary foci (e.g. math, social studies, ELA, Science, Music, Art, and World Languages). Interdisciplinary small group meetings will be taught by one or more ITE Secondary professors. Interdisciplinary groups will generally consist of all online or all face-to-face students.
  • Kahuewai (Disciplinary Small Groups). At other points in the semester, we will have the opportunity to meet in content specific (e.g. math, social studies, ELA, Science, Music, Art, and World Languages) small groups. These small groups will include students from the content area and disciplinary focus of your particular degree program. These small group meetings will be taught by the STE Secondary professors who specializes in your particular content area and may include both online and face-to-face students.

In addition, both online and face-to-face students will be integrated in some hui meetings types, meaning, both online and face-to-face students will attend the same class meetings.
